Businessman Nicholas Okwiri Onyango, a key witness in the murder case involving former Gor Mahia midfielder Collins Okoth, popularly known as Gattuso, told the court on Tuesday that he does not know the ex-footballer.
However, Onyango identified the second accused person, Sylvia Aoko, as someone who once lived with the mother of the deceased child.
Gattuso and Aoko are facing charges of killing a three-year-old girl in April 2024 at Lucky Summer, Nairobi.
Appearing before Milimani High Court Judge Alexander Muteti on September 23, 2025, Onyango testified that he had encountered Aoko several times while she was in the company of his business associate, Beatrice Awuor Odongo, the mother of the deceased minor.
Onyango explained that he and Beatrice were business partners. He sold eggs and smokies, while Beatrice sold tea (kahawa) and groundnuts (njugu) near Game Changer Club in Lucky Summer. He added that he was the one who introduced her to the night business, popularly known as “Usiku Sacco.”
During cross-examination, Prosecutor Dela Wilbey asked Onyango to account for his whereabouts on the night the child was killed.
Onyango said that on April 22, 2024, he and Beatrice worked at their usual spot until 4:40 am. They then walked home together before parting ways at about 4:45 am. He clarified that they did not live together, though he knew Beatrice resided with her daughter and a female friend.
The witness further testified that after leaving Beatrice, he slept in a makeshift shelter since he did not yet have a house of his own. He woke up at around 11 am to news of unrest in the area and later learned that a child had been murdered.
“I was told that the child belonged to the woman who sells njugu and kahawa,” he recounted. Despite learning this, he admitted that he did not go to the crime scene.
Onyango also confirmed that he knew the deceased child personally. When asked how a grown man could be “friends” with a three-year-old, he explained that the girl was the same age as his own child, which made them close.
