Three men suspected of being part of a criminal network involved in unlocking M-Kopa phones before customers had completed their loan payments have been detained by police.
The suspects Jeremiah Njoroge, Marvine Wandugo, and Victor Kimani were presented before the court under a miscellaneous application. Police officer Beth Kariuki, through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), requested the court to allow a 7-day detention period to finalize investigations before submitting the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and further action.
Preliminary findings indicated that the trio was found with five M-Kopa phones of various models, which they were allegedly in the process of unlocking unlawfully.
According to police, the suspects were apprehended at a shop along Tom Mboya Street following a tip-off about their illegal activities.
The court granted the prosecution’s request and ordered the suspects to remain in police custody until August 11, 2025, as investigations continue.
