Officer Rashid Demands Apology from Nation Media Over “False” Murder Trial Reporting.

Police officer Ahmed Rashid who was charged with murder has issued a stern demand to Nation Media Group, accusing the media house of publishing false and damaging information in relation to his ongoing murder trial.

In a demand letter dated 30th July 2025, addressed to the editorial offices of Nation Media Group Rashid’s legal team led by veteran criminal lawyer Danstan Omari claims that an article published on 29th July 2025 misrepresented key court proceedings in the case of Republic v Ahmed Rashid Hassan, which is ongoing at the Kibera High Court (Criminal Case No. 70 of 2023).

The contentious Nation article reportedly stated that, in one of the video footages presented during trial, “Mr. Rashid, dressed in red T-shirt, is seen firing at a man, whose hands appeared to be cuffed behind his back,” allegedly citing a statement made in court by an individual identified as Mr. Gichuki.

However, Omari strongly disputes the authenticity of this claim, stating, “Mr. Gichuki made no such statement at any time during the proceedings.” He insists the Nation Media article “completely misconstrued the facts and statements” and therefore constitutes a false publication, in violation of sections 22 and 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (Cap. 79C).

The letter further states that the publication has caused “public odium and ridicule” toward Ahmed Rashid and demands an immediate retraction, public apology, and withdrawal of the article from all platforms. Omari warned that the matter will be formally raised in court on 31st July 2025 during the next hearing.

Citing the public interest nature of the trial, the lawyers urged Nation Media Group to act swiftly and responsibly to correct the record.

Rashid, a former police officer, is facing murder charges over allegations that he executed two unarmed youths in broad daylight in Eastleigh. His case has drawn widespread attention and reignited debate over extrajudicial killings in Kenya.
