A man was today fined Sh20,000 or serve six months in jail after pleading guilty to being in possession of illicit brew contrary to the Law.
Joseph Njoroge was charged that on November 7, 2025, at Ndarugo area in Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County, he was found with 20 litres of chang’aa, an illicit alcoholic drink, without lawful authority.
When the prosecution read the facts, the court heard that on the said day at around 11 a.m., the area Assistant Chief met the accused carrying a 20-litre jerrican. She got suspicious and stopped him to inquire what he was carrying. Upon inspection, she discovered that the jerrican contained chang’aa.
The facts further stated that it was illegal to carry the illicit brew in a plastic jerrican, as the law requires it to be transported in a metal container. The 20-litre jerrican of chang’aa was produced in court as an exhibit.
The prosecutor also told the court that Njoroge had no previous criminal record. After considering his plea and the circumstances of the case, the court fined him Sh20,000 or, in default, six months imprisonment and the illicit brew to be destroyed.
