Royal Media Services Journalist Nancy Omweri has threatened to take legal action against controversial blogger Edgar Obare over what she terms as false and malicious allegations published on his social media platforms.
Through her lawyer Danstan Omari, Omweri issued a demand and notice of intention to sue accusing Obare of using his Instagram page “Bnnbasic” and Telegram channel (BNN Kenya) to circulate defamatory content linking her romantically to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
According to the letter, Obare allegedly gave his followers a platform to anonymously post damaging claims implying that Omweri was unfaithful to her husband and involved in inappropriate relations with powerful men. The posts, which included her photograph, reportedly went viral, drawing hundreds of reactions and shares.
Omweri, a well-known journalist, maintains that the claims are entirely false and have caused her mental anguish and reputational damage, both personally and professionally.
Her lawyer insists that Obare’s conduct amounts to criminal defamation under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, which prohibits publishing false information intended to discredit another person’s reputation.
Omweri has now demanded that Obare Admits liability for defamation and pay her Sh 10 million in damages.
Further, he should Issue a full public apology addressed to her and retract the defamatory content from all his social media platforms.
Omweri has given Obare seven days to comply failure to which she will formally file a defamation suit against him in court.
“Our client denies any knowledge of such information and is prepared to challenge you to produce this alleged evidence of her infidelity in a court of law,” the letter reads in part.
