JKIA Court Approves 23-Day Detention for Suspects in Former MP Charles Were’s Murder

In today’s court news, the JKIA Law Court has granted a 23-day detention order for two suspects linked to the assassination of former Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

The suspects, Ebel Ochieng and Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, are under investigation for the murder, which occurred on April 30, 2025.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Edwin Odhiambo was apprehended in possession of what is believed to be the murder weapon. Authorities have requested additional time to conduct a forensic examination of the recovered pistol.

Magistrate Gichobi, while approving the extended detention, stated that the case involves the shooting and killing of a sitting Member of Parliament a matter requiring thorough investigation.

She noted that submissions presented in court suggested the killing of Hon. Were was a meticulously planned and executed criminal act. The magistrate further emphasized that multiple individuals may have been involved, and investigators need adequate time to identify the actual perpetrators.

Given the complexity and gravity of the case, the court ruled that it was necessary to keep the suspects in custody to allow uninterrupted investigations.
