A former teacher was arraigned before a Nairobi court on Monday, facing charges of defrauding his friend of over Sh 43 million by falsely claiming he would help him convert the amount into U.S. dollars.
Taher Jivanjee Hassan Jamaly appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina and denied the charge of obtaining money by false pretenses.
The prosecution alleges that between November 24 and December 16, 2023, at Lang’ata, Hassan deceived his friend, Mohammed Zakirhusein Lukmanji, into believing he would assist in converting Sh 43,020,800 into U.S. dollars. According to police reports, Hassan knew from the outset that he had no intention or capability to fulfill this promise.
Hassan, after pleading not guilty, requested the court to grant him reasonable bail terms. Magistrate Onyina released him on a bond of Sh 400,000.
The case is scheduled for a pretrial conference on October 9, 2024.
