The Judiciary has confirmed an accidental shooting incident at Bungoma Law Courts on Tuesday morning that left five people injured. The incident occurred at around 10:50 a.m. during the hearing of a criminal matter before the High Court when a firearm belonging to a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer accidentally discharged.
According to an official statement, the bullet struck the officer himself, a Kenya Prisons officer, and three civilians who were present in court. The injured were immediately rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital where they are receiving treatment. Doctors have since confirmed that all the victims are in stable condition and there were no fatalities.
The Judiciary assured the public that court officials and members of the public who were within the court premises are safe. It further emphasized that the incident should not cause alarm as there were no serious injuries.
Following the shooting, the County security team promptly visited the Law Courts to assess the situation. The Judiciary spokesperson, Hon. Paul Ndemo, stated that investigations are underway and updates will be shared with the public as more information becomes available
