Court Grants 30-Day Detention for Four Suspects in Murder of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were

The Chief Magistrate’s Court at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has approved a 30-day detention order for four individuals suspected in the killing of Kasipul Constituency MP, Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were.

The suspects; William Imoli Shighali, Juma Ali Haikal, Douglas Muchiri Wambugu, and David Mihigo Kagame ; were presented before the JKIA Law Courts under a miscellaneous application filed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The DCI requested the extended detention to allow time for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged involvement of the suspects in the MP’s murder.

According to the DCI, the suspects will be held at various Nairobi police stations, including Ruaraka, Muthaiga, Capital Hill, and Kilimani. Investigators also intend to subject the suspects’ mobile phones to forensic analysis.

Hon. Were was fatally shot on April 30, 2025, while driving near the City Mortuary roundabout along Valley Road in Nairobi. Investigators believe the MP was followed by assailants riding a motorcycle from Parliament to the location where he was ambushed and killed.

The court was informed that CCTV footage captured images resembling some of the suspects as they allegedly trailed the MP. The DCI stated there was no need for an identification parade, as eyewitnesses have already provided physical descriptions of the suspects.

The court granted the DCI’s request to detain the suspects for 30 days to facilitate further analysis of the surveillance footage and complete other aspects of the investigation.
