A man identified as Kiprotich Ronoh Brian has been detained for seven days after being arraigned in court under a miscellaneous application. The prosecution had requested 14 days to hold the suspect to allow time for investigations to be completed.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ronoh is being probed for unauthorized interception of communication, identity theft, and involvement in organized crime.
The court was informed that on June 19, 2025, the DCI received a complaint from the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), prompting an investigation into the misuse of mobile phone numbers belonging to former Central Police Station OCS, Samson Kiprotich Taalam. These phones had been seized by IPOA as part of an ongoing forensic examination.
Taalam, the former OCS, had reported that his phone then in IPOA’s custody was being used to solicit money from unsuspecting members of the public, including his own family and legal representatives.
Prosecutors allege that Ronoh swapped Taalam’s SIM card after the officer’s arrest and used it to impersonate him, engaging in fraudulent schemes under Taalam’s identity and influence.
The DCI argued that releasing the suspect could jeopardize ongoing investigations, citing concerns that he may interfere with evidence or potential witnesses.
The Magistrate granted a seven-day detention period, ordering that Ronoh be held at Muthaiga Police Station as investigations continue.
