The Milimani Magistrate’s Court has acquitted Michael Macharia Njiri, popularly known as DJ Brownskin, of charges linked to aiding suicide, after finding that the prosecution failed to prove its case.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday morning, trial magistrate Carolyne Nyaguthii held that the evidence presented did not meet the required threshold of proof beyond reasonable doubt.
Brownskin had been charged with counselling his wife, Sharon Njeri Mwangi, to take her own life on July 29, 2022, at their home in Kariobangi South, Buruburu Sub-county.
He also faced a second count of neglect to prevent a felony, with prosecutors alleging that he failed to take reasonable steps to stop the suicide.
The court heard that Mwangi died after allegedly ingesting poison.
The case attracted widespread public attention following the circulation of a video online, which prosecutors claimed showed Brownskin watching as she took the substance.
In a separate charge, Brownskin was accused of destroying potential evidence by deleting suicide-related material from his phone on June 1, 2023, despite allegedly knowing it would be required in court proceedings.
However, Magistrate Nyaguthii ruled that the prosecution’s evidence did not sufficiently establish the elements of the offences as charged.
DJ Brownskin was first arraigned in court in June 2023, following investigations into his wife’s death.
