A member of the Busia Robusta Coffee Growers Farmers Cooperative Limited has been charged with defrauding a Tanzanian businessman of USD 47,600 (approximately Ksh 7.3 million) through a fake coffee supply deal.

The suspect, Leonard Morice Murwayi, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at the Milimani Law Courts, where he faced charges of obtaining money by false pretence.

According to the charge sheet, Murwayi allegedly obtained the money from Abdulkarim Ismail, a Tanzanian businessman, between September 27 and October 15, 2024, at the Cooperative Bank in Busia Town. He is accused of falsely claiming that he could supply 19.2 tonnes of Robusta coffee through the Busia Robusta Coffee Growers Cooperative Limited.

Murwayi denied the charges and was released on a Ksh 1 million bond pending the hearing and determination of the case.
