A man accused of stealing more than Sh500,000 from a client while masquerading as a taxi driver has been detained at Kabete Police Station until Monday, when his case will be heard.
Fred Atandi Morara appeared before Magistrate Casmir Obiero at the Dagoretti Law Courts, where the court granted police permission to continue holding him for further investigations and case preparation.
According to detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Morara was arrested earlier this week following a complaint filed by a male victim. The complainant reported that on the night of August 8, 2025, he and a friend were leaving a social establishment in Lavington, Nairobi, when they encountered Morara posing as a taxi driver.
The suspect allegedly lured the men by offering a fare lower than that of online ride-hailing services and was subsequently hired to transport them to an Airbnb in the neighborhood. Upon arrival, Morara is said to have disappeared with the complainant’s phone. He then allegedly transferred more than Sh500,000 into various mobile money accounts, which were later deactivated.
During his arrest, Morara was found driving a Mazda Demio bearing suspected fake number plates KDQ 810B and KDN 993Q. Investigators also recovered several mobile phones, multiple SIM cards, and a sisal rope from the vehicle.
The case is scheduled for mention on Monday, September 22, 2025.
