Hussan Ahmed, a Sudanese national, told the court that he was standing barely a metre away from Zaitun Kavaya when she allegedly jumped to her death from a fifth-floor apartment in Kilimani in 2025.
Testifying in the inquest into the death of the 55-year-old mama fua, Ahmed said he was on a phone call at the time of the incident and witnessed the deceased leap from the balcony under circumstances he described as sudden and shocking.
Ahmed, who is now a witness in the fact-finding proceedings, was initially charged with the murder before the matter was later converted into an inquest to establish the exact cause and circumstances surrounding Zaitun’s death.
The court heard that Ahmed was Zaitun’s employer and had confronted her shortly before the incident, accusing her of stealing Sh5,000 from him. He admitted that he threatened to report her to the police over the alleged theft.
According to his testimony, the accusation and threat appeared to deeply distress Zaitun, and he suggested that the shock may have driven her to take her own life.
The inquest continues as the court seeks to determine what led to the fatal fall and whether any party bears criminal responsibility.
