The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has moved to court seeking orders to detain a murder suspect for 21 days to allow detectives to complete investigations.
The application was filed at the Milimani Law Courts before Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego in a miscellaneous criminal matter involving Erick Kamande Muthoni, also known as Erico. He is under investigation over the alleged murder of Dickson Gitonga Muriuki, alias Kanyiri.
In an affidavit sworn by Corporal Antony Kerini, an officer attached to DCI Central, the court was informed that investigators are probing the offence of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. The incident was reported at Ngara Police Station under Occurrence Book (OB) number 14/16/08/2025.
According to the application, the suspect was initially arrested by members of the public before being booked at Central Police Station under OB number 93/05/01/2026. He was later handed over to DCI officers for further investigations.
CPL Kerini told the court that preliminary inquiries established that the suspect is a street dweller with no fixed place of abode, no known family members or contacts, and does not own or use a mobile phone. He argued that these circumstances render the suspect a high flight risk should he be released on bail or bond.
The investigating officer further stated that investigations are at a critical stage, with detectives actively pursuing leads related to the alleged murder weapon. He added that the suspect has expressed willingness to cooperate with investigators.
The State has therefore urged the court to allow the continued detention of the suspect for 21 days to enable officers to conclude investigations.
