As the Ministry of Health, under the leadership of Hon. Aden Duale, strives to enhance service delivery in public hospitals through technology, it is disheartening that some Hospital staff members have allegedly chosen to exploit these efforts for personal gain.
This betrayal came to light after a senior officer at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) was arraigned in court over the theft of 56 Lenovo M10 tablets valued at KSh 3,655,680, property belonging to the hospital.
The accused, Dennis Otieno, appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at the Milimani Law Courts, where he faced charges of stealing by servant.
According to the charge sheet, Otieno is accused of stealing the devices between October 18, 2023, and February 27, 2025, at KNH in Nairobi. The tablets were reportedly procured by the Ministry of Health as part of its initiative to integrate Information Technology into public healthcare systems to improve service access.
Otieno, who has worked at KNH for nearly 22 years and serves as the Vice Chair of the hospital’s Staff Organization Department, denied the charges. He was released on a cash bail of KSh 300,000 pending trial.
