Police at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have arrested Fobonou Wassou De-dieua, alias Joseph Kabongo, a Cameroonian national facing fraud charges, after he allegedly attempted to leave the country without the court’s approval.
Fobonou, who is accused of defrauding Hayet Amri of Ksh 3.5 million in a fake gold deal, was intercepted by detectives on August 20, 2025 as he prepared to board a Philippine-bound flight.
According to prosecutors, one of his bond conditions was to deposit his passport in court and seek permission before leaving the country. Although he complied by surrendering his passport which was due to expire in March he is said to have acquired a new passport and presented the expired one in court, in an attempt to bypass the restrictions.
In his defense, Fobonou claimed he was unaware that he was required to seek the court’s permission before traveling. He argued that his trip was necessitated by a pressing health condition and that he intended to return after receiving treatment abroad.
However, Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego dismissed his explanation, ruling that Fobonou had willfully breached his bond terms. The court granted the prosecution’s request to cancel his bond and ordered his detention pending the hearing of the initial fraud case
