The High Court has suspended the implementation of President William Ruto’s newly established Multi-Agency Team on the War Against Corruption (MAT-WAC), dealing a major blow to the government.
Justice Bahati Mwamuye issued the conservatory orders after a petition was filed by Dr. Benjamin Gikenyi and others, challenging the legality and constitutionality of the presidential directive.
In his ruling, Justice Mwamuye directed the respondents to file their responses by the close of business on August 29, 2025. The case will be mentioned on September 9, 2025 to confirm compliance and set further directions.
The petitioners argue that the creation of MAT-WAC is unconstitutional and duplicates the mandate of existing independent bodies such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The court’s temporary orders mean the multi-agency team cannot undertake any activities until the matter is heard and determined.
