DCI Seeks Court Approval to Destroy 189 Kilos of Bhang Seized in Juja

Nairobi, 2025 The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through its Anti-Narcotics Unit, has filed an urgent application at the JKIA Magistrate’s Court seeking orders to destroy 189.3 kilograms of cannabis (bhang) recovered during a high-profile drug bust in Juja, Kiambu County.

In the application sworn by Corporal Jeremiah Musango, the DCI cited serious health and logistical concerns arising from the continued storage of the bulky narcotics at their headquarters in Nairobi.

According to the affidavit, the drugs were recovered in August 2024 from a residential apartment where three suspects Nancy Indoveria Kigunzu, David Ochieng Okoth, and Christopher Odipo Ochieng were arrested and later charged with trafficking under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act.

The drugs, stashed in seven sacks and 22 packages, were sampled and weighed by a government analyst. The remainder has been stored as exhibits, but the DCI now warns that the storage area spanning over 160 square feet is overwhelmed and poses a biohazard due to rodent infestation and strong odors.

The prosecution argues that immediate destruction is both legally justified and in line with international best practices, which discourage prolonged storage of high-value narcotics due to the risks they pose to officers and the public.

The state wants the court to issue Orders for immediate destruction of the seized cannabis and for Permission to rely on the samples during trial;
