Fraud Suspect Nabbed Over Fake Affordable Housing Deal

A man accused of exploiting President William Ruto’s affordable housing initiative to defraud unsuspecting businesspeople has finally been brought to justice.

Jacob Okumu Anyumba, operating under the name Risknet Insurance Agency Limited, was arraigned before a Nairobi court on charges of defrauding a company of over Ksh 12 million.

According to the charge sheet, Anyumba allegedly defrauded Dumpken Enterprises Limited of Ksh 12,573,000 by falsely claiming he could secure a performance bond valued at Ksh 1.87 billion. The bond was purportedly necessary for a government-awarded tender to construct affordable housing units in Makuyu Constituency.

In an additional count, he faces charges of obtaining the same amount from Dumpken Enterprises under false pretenses.

Appearing before Magistrate Carolyne Mugo, Anyumba denied the charges. The court granted him release on a Ksh 3 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 1.5 million.

The case is scheduled to proceed to plea hearing on June 11, 2025.
