A major shake-up has rocked the Nyamira County Assembly after 10 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were expelled for missing eight consecutive sittings without official leave, in what is being termed as a strict enforcement of House rules on attendance and discipline.
Among those expelled are:
1. Hon. Nyambega Gisesa โ Rigoma Ward
2. Hon. Joel Ombongi โ Bokeira Ward
3. Hon. Martha Marwa
4. Hon. Jeliah Nyakangโi
5. Hon. Beatrice Onyancha
6. Hon. Edinah Obara
7. Hon. Janerose Nafula
8. Hon. Elijah Abere
9. Hon. Lydiah Bosire
10. Hon. Zipporah Matundura
The Assembly has cited Standing Orders and the Leadership and Integrity Act as the basis for their removal, emphasizing that consistent absenteeism undermines the core duties of representation and oversight.
In addition to the expulsions, two other MCAs have been suspended. Hon. Abel Mokaya was handed a 60-day suspension for unspecified misconduct, while Hon. Lameck Sikweya Enana was suspended for missing seven consecutive sittings just one short of the threshold that triggered the expulsions.
The disciplinary measures come amid heightened scrutiny over the performance and accountability of elected leaders in county governments. The Assembly leadership has reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline and enforcing rules without fear or favor.
Political analysts have noted that the move may trigger legal and political contests, particularly among the affected MCAs and their supporters.
